Centennial Celebration
1925 – 2025
On April 20, 1925, the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Board in New York City approved the Arizona Section’s proposed constitution, and the Section was established. The first president was George E.P. Smith. W.W. Lane and J.B. Girand served as vice-presidents. W.E. Dickenson was secretary. The Section had 32 members its first year.
Throughout 2025 the Arizona Section celebrated its centennial with a wide range of events and activities. These events brought members together to reflect on ASCE’s legacy, connect with the civil engineering community, and spotlight significant engineering projects across Arizona.
- The Centennial logo shown on this page was designed by an Arizona Section member.
- A Commendation signed by the Arizona Governor was obtained.
- A Centennial medallion featuring the Theodore Roosevelt Dam and Roosevelt Lake Bridge on one side and the Centennial logo on the other side was produced, along with a Centennial pin.
- Historical research was conducted and a timeline (1870s to 2025) titled “A History of Civil Engineering in Arizona” prepared.
- A videography company was retained to assist the Section with preparing a centennial video.
- A statewide gala celebration dinner was held on the Arizona State University’s Tempe campus. The evening was highlighted by a keynote address from 2016 ASCE President Mark Woodson (April 26, 2025).
- Celebrations were held in Tucson (February 28, 2025), Flagstaff (June 7, 2025), and Yuma (October 9, 2025).
- STEM Day at the Park for K-6th graders was held at Pioneer Park in Mesa (October 11, 2025).
